The Cursed Blue Rose
Herds set the pace here. Pratana stands in the tall-grass savanna of the south, country that greens hard in the wet season and browns off in the dry, and the city's year is divided by that rhythm: planting and harvest close in, cattle driven out and brought back across the open ground beyond. Grain, hides, milk, horn and meat pass through its markets in quantity, and the surrounding country feeds far more mouths than the city holds. Substantial as southern cities go, Pratana counts its strength in beasts and in stored grain.
Grazing rights, shares of a harvest, the terms of a herding season: the Pratani settle each of them in the Lohanar way, written and witnessed. Their allegiance runs to Vallaris, and through Vallaris into the wider bloc that answers to Mareva. Religion is no small side-trade here but a real part of the city's living. The Religion of the Ruby holds the calendar, its all-female priesthood serving one goddess in six aspects, and the Pratani favour the Joyqueen among them, so the great days of the year go to feasting, music and pleasure taken openly by a city with food enough to spare for it.
