The Cursed Blue Rose
Everything Grivallum has comes off open grassland. Ploughland lies close in, grain and fodder in whatever the season will carry; beyond it the pasture runs out to the horizon, worked by drovers who move cattle between water and grazing on a long seasonal circuit. Harvest and herd feed the city and a great deal besides it. The same openness that makes the land productive makes it easy to cross, so Grivallum carries a military weight out of proportion to its size, and its walls, muster-yards and remount lines are as much a part of the living as the granaries.
Substantial without being grand, the city stands among the original foundations of the southern Lohanar. Its people farm, herd and soldier, often the same family in different seasons, and they carry the Lohanar preference for law over strong hands: grazing rights, service terms and grain shares are settled in writing and enforced the same way. Allegiance is owed to Arkenta. Rule, in practice, comes from Bareshum, and the city is counted within the bloc that Bareshum leads.
