The Cursed Blue Rose
Wealth arrives here by keel. Shipping is the first business of Venesta, and the trades that gather around a working port fill most of its streets: hulls built and repaired, cargoes consigned, crews signed on and paid off, chandlers and brokers thick along the front. What sets the place apart from its neighbours lies behind the waterfront, in houses of study where navigation, letters and law are taught and argued at length by men who will never sail. Ore from workings inland gives the city a third leg to stand on, and gives its yards something to sell besides passage.
The Venestines are Lohanar, and their city stands among the original foundations of the south. Government sits at home: Venesta is ruled by its own faction, under its own agreements, and it has held that independence while binding itself outward in every direction. Its allegiance runs to Arkenta, and in the wider alignment of the southern powers it is counted with the bloc gathered at Bareshum. Two obligations, one city, and a great deal of careful drafting to keep both in force at once.
