Phosaria — The Radiant Light

Light is not merely bright. Light is the only thing in the world that carries a message and does work at the same time.

Phosaria is Radiance: the schema of the Ancient Deity, and the reason the faith named after it has armies rather than only hymns.

It is a common error to file Radiance under fire because both are warm and both glow. The distinction is exact and it matters. Fire is undifferentiated energy — it does work. Light directs: it illuminates, it carries information, it governs the cycles of living things, it converts what falls on a leaf into the substance of the leaf. Radiance is energy that has been given a direction and a purpose before it arrives.

This is why Phosaria heals where fire cannot, wards where fire only burns, and can hold a thing coherent that would otherwise come apart. It is also why it is inherited: the Deity did not leave a technique behind her. She left a bloodline.

• Illumination as a working. What Radiance falls on is revealed, and revelation here is a physical event rather than a metaphor — corruption, disguise and false working all fail under it.
• Conversion. Phosaria turns raw external energy into organised, living structure. Every green thing in the world is doing a crude version of the same operation.
• Coherence. It holds an identity, a body or a system together as one continuing thing. This is the property the Emberguard's healers rely on and the property the Radiant Vanguard puts into its armour.
• Passed by blood. The Deity's radiance descends through lineage — most famously through the Royal House of Belstern — and a Radiant monarch's claim to rule is not a metaphor either.

• It cannot be learned. No amount of study grants Radiance to someone who was not born with it. Everything the great cathedrals teach is technique laid over an inheritance the student either has or does not.
• It is poor at destruction. Radiance is a schema of order, direction and preservation. Turned to killing it is clumsy, and those who force it in that direction tend to damage themselves first.
• It can fracture. A Radiance that has been broken does not simply weaken. It becomes unreliable, cutting where it should hold and failing where it should cut, and the cost of using it falls on the wielder.
• The colour is fixed — except once. Radiance has burned warm and golden for as long as the church has kept records. There is exactly one documented exception, and the clergy have never produced an explanation of it that satisfies anyone, including themselves.
