The Cursed Blue Rose
Everything in Basaran bends toward the water. The city stands on a lake shore deep in the boreal forest of the west, slipways and moorings strung along the bank, timber brought down out of the surrounding stands to be shaped into hulls. Naval work sets the calendar as much as the livelihood: ropewalks and rigging lofts run through the frozen months so that open water finds the yards ready rather than starting. By the reckoning of the western forest this is a substantial city, and it carries itself like one.
Basaran was raised in the fifth and most recent wave of expansion, yet it answers to nothing above it. The allegiance takes its name from the city, and the forest settlements inside that allegiance answer here. The people who work those yards are Ashanar, covenant-keepers and hard bargainers, easy on water and untroubled by long spells away from land.
