The Cursed Blue Rose
Level, deep-soiled and wide, the grassland around Brynakor is the plainest wealth in the west: no ore, no harbour, no forest worth an axe, only ground that grows what is put into it. The city farms and pretends to nothing else. Its year is a field year, sowing and weeding and the long anxious wait on rain, then harvest, then threshing floors and granaries and the slow business of moving surplus toward places that cannot feed themselves. Neither lake nor river lies within reach, so the season turns entirely on what falls from the sky, which makes the farmers careful about seed and stubborn about storage. A good year feeds far more than Brynakor. A poor one is eaten quietly out of reserve.
Second-wave Ashanar broke this ground, and the city grew substantial on it. Allegiance is owed to Saradir, yet the hand on its governance is Torolok's, and Torolok is likewise the bloc it is counted within, a division the farmers treat rather as they treat weather: unchosen, worked around, seldom argued with aloud.
