Celasor

The City Above the Last Redoubt

Celasor is the youngest of the Infernate's cities and the one built over the oldest thing any of them touch. Late in the 1200s an adventurer sheltering from a sandstorm stumbled into a half-sunken cave mouth in the temperate desert — and found below it an intact subterranean temple-city, carved millennia ago by a reptilian Beast-race that walled itself in there to die. The complex held rooms of worked silver laid up like scripture, a carved aquifer system whose winding channels must have taken generations to cut, and door after monumental door that its builders sealed from within.

The surface city has never pretended to permanence. It is still an expedition camp with a wall around it — dust-grey masonry, cream canvas and dark goat-hair cloth, timber scaffolds and covered ventilation towers — because the real city is downstairs. The uppermost buried level is fully inhabited now: a scholars' enclave of polished green-black halls ribbed in pale quartzite and veined with silver inlay, every ceiling built for beings slightly smaller than men and every hall built for congregations of thousands. Deeper levels are occupied the way a tide occupies a shore — research camps advancing and withdrawing by permit, license and nerve.

The Threshold Keep

Everything and everyone that goes down or comes up passes the Threshold Keep — fortress, customs house, university gate and artifact registry in one. Celasor's true economy is access, sold in ascending grades: surface visitation, upper-level tours, scholarly permits, expedition licenses, restricted descent. Recovered silverwork leaves under seal; context is recorded before treasure is moved; and by common consent — the one law every rival scholar, thaumaturge and treasure-hunter in the city obeys — the most dangerous sealed doors stay sealed. The silver veins below are still live, but no one mines here anymore. The dead city yields more, and asks more delicately.

The Ormina

Deep beneath the scholars' level, past galleries no permit reaches, lives Celasor's strangest partnership. The ormina — the Golden Molemen, as the first expedition called them — are a Beast-people superbly made for the dark: nearly blind, gold-furred, and possessed of a sense that reads the resonance of thymarically-charged matter the way other creatures read light. They keep their own district far below and meet the surface world in the shared Resonance Galleries, where their gift and the thaumaturges' learning have proved useful enough to each other that the arrangement has survived every incident to date.

One recovery out of the deep halls the city will neither confirm nor discuss: it was from Celasor that the Creed brought up the Ashen Serpent — the buried god now bound to the Mistress of Kharbeta. Which chamber yielded it, and what was given for it, no grade of access will buy.
