The Cursed Blue Rose
Candova stands where the southern savanna runs out of land: tall dry grass, scattered trees, and then the ocean. It is a modest town by the measure of the south, but an old one, among the original foundations laid down when its people first settled this coast. Three things keep it alive. Ore comes down from the country behind, furnaces and workshops turn that ore into finished goods, and the harbour carries the result away. The Candovan year follows the rains, which green the grazing and soften the roads in their season, then withdraw and leave the yards and quays working flat out.
Contracts do the governing here, in the Lohanar manner: shares in a furnace, terms of carriage, a season's labour, each set down and witnessed. Allegiance runs to Vallaris, and through Vallaris into the wider bloc gathered around Mareva. The faith is the Religion of the Ruby, one goddess in six aspects served by an all-female priesthood, and of the six the Candovans favour the Scorchmother, who governs growth. It suits a town measured by what the grass feeds and what the furnaces increase.
