Derosam

The Sealed Spring of the Desert

Derosam is not a city that found water; it is water that permitted a city. At its heart stands the largest oasis in all Kworgalya — a green park the size of a town, thick with canopy in the middle of the temperate desert — and at the heart of that stands a bare rock outcrop ringed by a wall of white stone. The wall is old, and it is not decoration. Behind it, in walled-off grottos beneath the rock, dwell the desert oasis nymphs who are said to sustain the spring; from it, one straight low aqueduct of pale stone runs out through the whole city, throwing off side-channels to district pools, orchards and courts like a stem putting out leaves.

To touch the sealed wall or the main aqueduct is death. The law admits one exception — a child's hand — and needs no signposts; Derosenes learn the shape of the taboo the way they learn to walk, and strangers learn it from the way the whole street goes quiet.

The Compact

The founding story is told at every Derosene table. A lost Lohanar expedition, wandering half-dead through a fortnight of sandstorm, came upon the oasis and the nymphs who kept it — and its commander knelt and bargained: his people to drink and to settle, so long as they never sought the hidden source and never harmed its keepers. Adopted as sons and defenders of the water, they built accordingly. Centuries later, the tale continues, the spring failed — and a Prince of Derosam walked alone into the aquifer, ordered the passage sealed behind him, and did not come back; a fortnight to the day after the waters stopped, they returned. Whether the histories would survive scrutiny matters less than what they built: a people who treat their oasis as kin rather than property, and who defend it with a zeal the Infernate itself steps carefully around. Merynon administers Derosam directly — and respects its water-law to the letter, having concluded, sensibly, that some things are cheaper to honor than to test.

Rings of Green and Dust

The city is built in rings that can be read like a ledger. Closest to the sealed heart, under the thickest canopy, live the priestly and custodian households in low garden compounds — status here is measured in shade. Then the civic ring: markets, artisans, bridges, the Hall of Waters where the water-law is kept and judged. Then the dry edge, where the green gives out: caravan yards, drier wards, and the great pens of the fat-tailed sheep, for Derosam anchors the southern end of the sheep-roads that feed the whole northern Infernate. Vegetation thins, rank thins with it — and every Derosene, from the garden ring to the dust, will tell you the same thing: the city does not own the spring. The spring suffers the city, and only for as long as the compact holds.
