What the charts and ledgers of Kworgalya record of this place. Its own story has not yet been told.
Merynon is a boast made of stone. In the middle of the temperate desert, where every other settlement hunches grey and practical around its wells, the capital of the Infernate rises white — pale marble and quartzite façades, cream-plastered residential rings, colonnades holding their shade like held breath. Nothing about the desert produces such a city. That is precisely the point. Every gleaming course of it announces that the state can move stone, water, and ten thousand laborers wherever it pleases.
The city is far older than the state it rules. It was founded nearly two thousand years ago as Domarus, at the close of the first great expansion — a deliberate, planned base for pushing civilization into an interior that belonged to no one, and it carried that expansionist charter through every age that followed. The name it bears now is younger, and heavier: in 1200 DS the city was renamed Merynon, in honor of the Dark Queen at the height of her long dominion. Her empire died; the name stayed. The Infernate that Grand Hierophant Kris rebuilt from the wreckage rules from her city and has never seen a reason to unsay it.
Merynon's first trade is empire itself. The Grand Hierophant rules from here when he is not in the field, and beneath him works the most unglamorous engine of Infernate power: the archive wards. Scribes, statisticians, judges and logisticians record the state's whole metabolism on clay and vellum — ore tallies, water allocations, road schedules, labor rosters, the marching arithmetic of the legions — and the dry air preserves every line of it. Soldiers are the city's chief export, and paperwork is its second; the Infernate is held together as much by the one as the other.
The city's third trade walks on four legs. Merynon breeds the donkeys and mules that carry the Infernate's logistics across the waste — remount yards and courier stables are woven into the urban plan the way temples are elsewhere — and the state reckons a good mule line among its strategic assets, alongside the browsing-goat herds its nomads run beyond the walls.
The pale city is maintained like a rite. Dressed white stone for the gates, arcades and administrative halls; lime plaster over rubble cores carrying the same ivory light through the common wards; and only the rarest veins of blue-grey and red marble permitted, in thresholds and state insignia, so that the eye never doubts what color power is. Caravans coming up from Portavena and Brennisa, or down from the lake country with grain and timber, see the capital burning white on the horizon a day before they reach its gates — which, veterans of the road agree, is exactly how the Infernate likes to be seen.
