The Cursed Blue Rose
More of Kworgalya's settlements stand in its centre than in any other region: twenty-eight of the hundred and seventeen. It is dry country. Temperate desert covers ten of them and grassland six, with temperate rainforest in the wetter corners and snowy mountain at the heights; sixteen of the twenty-eight — a clear majority — have no water access whatever and must live on what the roads bring. Mining is the first living of ten towns, garrison duty of six, farming of five.
The great features of the map crowd in on every side. The Frostpeaks and the ice of the Glacial Dominion close the north, Azcaloth lies north and west, and the Greathammers and the Blackspire Abyss mark the southern boundary.
The centre is the one region where the peoples of the continent genuinely mix: twelve Lohanar settlements, nine Suvanar and seven elven, none of them dominant. So do the faiths. Nine towns keep the Infernal Creed, eight the Radiant Light and four hold the Ruby as divine — the only region of the Atlas in which three faiths stand in real numbers against one another.
The politics follow the same pattern. The Creed holds seven settlements outright and the Glacial Dominion six, with Risbern, Brunthar and Eisvelde holding the rest between them; above these the blocs of Risbern and the Creed each gather nine. Risbern itself is one of the greatest cities of the world, and Eisvelde a great city behind it.
