The Cursed Blue Rose
Two waters make Kabaso. A river out of the boreal forest arrives at the ocean here, giving sheltered anchorage within and open sea beyond, and behind both stands an unbroken supply of the timber and pitch that fleets consume. The shoreline reads as one continuous yard, with slipways and berths, mast ponds, ropewalks, sheds for sailcloth and cordage, and the noise of refitting going on somewhere along it in almost any weather. Fish and forest keep the workers fed. Hulls are what the place is actually for, and it has grown substantial on them.
Founders of the fourth wave built here, and their people are the far-horizon Ashanar at their most characteristic: bound by covenant ashore, corsairs where the sea permits, at ease with a voyage that ends somewhere nobody at home has seen. Kabaso answers to itself. Smaller settlements along the same shore answer to Kabaso, sending down what they dig and taking back what only a harbour can bring in.
