North past the Blood Gate lies Azcaloth, the burning land — a country of split stone and standing ash where the world's fire runs so near the surface that the ground itself seems fevered. No crown claims it. No road crosses it. And in its deep places, something older than any crown is bound.
On the demons themselves, no two chronicles agree — what they are, where they were first kindled, or what they want. The old accounts say only this with one voice: that they are creatures of a wrong fire, a flame that does not warm and does not light; that they were bound in the deep places of Azcaloth long ago, and bound on purpose; and that the binding was never meant to be tested.
It has been tested.
When the demons stirred and rose, it was Glacya who met them — the immortal Frost Queen carrying her unmelting cold into the one country on Kworgale most hostile to it. The war she fought in Azcaloth is among the least recorded of her long life, for she has never spoken of it, and those who marched with her did not all return to speak of it either. It was in those same years, while her strength was spent against the demons, that her own Dominion was betrayed from within — a theft that began the war at the Blood Gate, and has never ended.
Beneath Azcaloth beats the Pyreheart — the deep source of the world's fire, wild and unbound, from the days before any law was set over flame. Every power that hungers after fire has, in some age, turned its eyes toward it: the zealots of the Infernal Creed above all. The Bloodbound Covenant stands its eternal watch at the Gate precisely so that no such pilgrimage ever arrives — for whatever the demons are, they are of that place, and what wakes them has never once been worth what it woke.
The wise do not go to Azcaloth. The chronicles are the record of the unwise.
Two films carry this story — the awakening, and the longer telling of it.
