The War at the Blood Gate

South of the burning land of Azcaloth, where the world's fire runs too near the surface and the deep resonance called the Pyreheart beats beneath the stone, there stands a fortress gate of black rock and old frost. The charts name it simply the Blood Gate. It has never fallen. This is the story of the war that has been fought at it, without pause, for centuries.

The Theft of the Frozen Heart

The war begins, as many of Kworgale's wars do, with a refusal — and a theft.

A sect of elves within the Glacial Dominion became possessed by a single idea: that true immortality could be wrung from ice. Preservation, perfected, is eternity — so their doctrine ran, and it led them at last to the one relic they could never be permitted: the preserved heart of Lysara, beloved sister of Glacya herself. The Frost Queen refused them. Whatever slept in her sister's heart, it was not theirs, and it was not for taking.

They took it anyway. While Glacya stood at war against the demons of Azcaloth, the sect betrayed the Dominion, stole the heart, and fled south beyond the burning land — into country where the barbarian tribes and the Ashen Colossi, fire-maddened giants, roam. There they raised a fortress of their own, and there they worked their great ritual of ascension.

The Ritual That Failed

The ritual did not grant them eternity. It granted them something else.

They rose from it as beings of living ice — their hearts stilled, their bodies frozen past the reach of life or death, shatterable but never slain, reforming from the frost that made them. And the stasis they had sought came with a price fitted precisely to their crime: an unending hunger for warmth. To hold their forms they must drink the blood of the living — the fire-attuned above all — and those who starve do not die. They dwindle into mindless husks of ice, wandering the frozen wastes without thought or name.

Thus were born the first vampires of the Bloodbound Covenant, cursed not by an enemy but by their own arrogance.

The Oath at the Gate

Glacya marched on their fortress to end them. What she found was not defiance but grief — and an offer. The cursed elves knelt and swore to stand as eternal sentinels of Azcaloth: to bar the way against every zealot of the Infernal Creed and every fire-maddened Colossus that sought the Pyreheart and the unbound fire that sleeps there. The Frost Queen weighed her sister's desecration against the worth of an undying garrison — and let them live, on the terms of their own oath.

So they built the Blood Gate: a fortress-gate vast as a mountain's shoulder, the last barrier between the mortal world and the wild fire beneath Azcaloth. They have kept it since.

The Longest War

The war at the Blood Gate has no truces and no seasons. Creed zealots come north to reach the fire; the Colossi come in their madness; and the Covenant feeds on those who try the Gate, sustaining the curse by way of the duty. Glacya has never forgiven them. The world has never thanked them. And the chronicles have never settled the only question that matters — whether the Bloodbound are monsters wearing a penance, or heroes in exile whom no one will mourn.

The Gate, in any case, holds.
