The Cursed Blue Rose
The world you can touch is one of five layers, and it is the shallowest.
Beyond it lies the Veil — a psychic plane that covers all mental activity, including every dream that has ever been dreamt. It is where thaumaturges go to learn things they cannot learn anywhere else, and it is one of the most reliably lethal places a living body can be put.
Avadara is the Material Plane: physical existence, solidity, grounded reality. Its name means the foundation of becoming — existence in its most settled and most descended form. It is where you are standing.
Avarana is the barrier between the Avadara and the Veil. The word means covering, concealment, obstruction, and it is not a wall so much as an active hiding — the reason almost nobody in the material world can perceive what lies past it.
Antarala is the Shallow Veil, the first and more hospitable layer beyond the Avarana. In old temple architecture an antarāla is the vestibule between the outer hall and the inner sanctum, and the name is exact: it is a between-space, shaped and steadied by the sapient minds within it, reflecting thought back as something almost tangible.
Kavacha is the barrier between the Shallow Veil and the Deep. The word means armour, and crucially it is a deliberate barrier rather than a natural one. It has to be kept.
Pramasuna is the Deep Veil: the formless, thoughtless expanse past the Kavacha, the void of every thought not thought and every impossibility. Its coined name runs through three older roots — madness, cosmic dissolution, emptiness — so that the word performs its own meaning as you read it. Mind, structure and meaning do not survive there. Neither does anything else.
The five layers are named in the oldest cosmological tongue because they are features of reality itself. The practice that maintains the Kavacha is named in another tongue entirely, because it is not a feature of reality — it is something mortals invented.
Amyrama means, roughly, defensive stitching: to ward by sewing. The Kavacha is the armour; the Amyrama is the needlework that keeps the armour from unravelling. The name carries an active sense, and it is meant to. The barrier between the world and the void is not self-sustaining. Somebody is holding it shut, continuously, and has been for a very long time.
To dream is to open a small unstable pocket of the Veil and stand inside it. It closes when you wake, or when you die, and what it reverts to is the Deep — which is exactly why sleeping is safe and going there in the body is not.
Inside the Veil the rules run on belief, but subconscious belief, which is a very different and much crueller thing. You cannot decide to lucid-dream your way through it. You will need to eat if some part of you is convinced you need to eat. You could reshape the architecture around you with a thought, but only if you genuinely believed that reshaping architecture with a thought was an ordinary thing to be able to do.
Nobody genuinely believes that. This is the trap the Veil sets for clever people.
A mind can hold a piece of the Veil open. A mind gets tired.
Physical matter does not. An object that is materially there in the Veil requires no maintenance by any psyche at all — it simply persists, and everything around it borrows that persistence. These are Anchors, and they are the only dependable foothold the plane allows.
The Crystal Ships of the Elehath were Anchors. That is what they were for. They are remembered as vessels that crossed the sea, and they did, but the crossing that mattered was the other one: they let their builders move through the Deep Veil without being dissolved on the way.
A permanent consciousness with no body to return to can also hold a stable dreamscape open indefinitely, and inhabit it, and be — in every sense that matters to the inhabitant — somewhere. There are said to be places in the Shallow Veil where this has gone on so long the dreamscape has stopped feeling like one. There is even said to be a breach: a city that exists physically on the wrong side of the Avarana. Sailors who repeat the name Eternalya are usually asked to stop.
Because of what happens between minds there.
In the Veil, sapient beings mind-match. Thought, intent, emotion and whole concepts pass between them directly, without the fumbling machinery of words and diagrams. Ideas that take a lifetime to explain in the Avadara can be handed over intact.
That is the entire justification for conducting research in a place that dissolves people. It has always been considered a fair trade by the sort of person who conducts research in a place that dissolves people.
