Kharbeta

The Serpent's Crown

Kharbeta was not built by men, and it never lets its forty thousand human residents forget it. The black city on the Ashen Plains was the capital of the Ashen Colossi — the fire-maddened giants, ten and twenty feet tall, whose slaughter of Argentum began the First Crusade against the Beasts — and it was the Third Crusade that finally broke it, in 146 DS, leaving the great slab-built ziggurats empty on the ash for over a thousand years. The stone endured. Amphibolite and black quartzite fitted in courses taller than a man do not care who wins.

In 1292 DS, with the Satrapy Wars ended, Grand Hierophant Kris ordered the dead capital rebuilt — and among the laborers were captive Colossi themselves, giants in chains raising their ancestors' walls for a human god-state. Ten years later Kharbeta lived again: a human city poured into a giant one, its people building inside the colossal halls and atop the vast terraces, its new brick and steel braces legible against the ancient black like stitching on a wound. Even full, the city looks underfilled — avenues built for giants' strides, sealed structures no one has claimed, and everywhere the old reliefs defaced and re-carved with the serpent.

The Mistress of Smoke

Since 1333 DS the city has belonged to Rysalia — High Commander of the Infernate, the Hierophant's younger daughter and designated successor, called the Mistress of Smoke and the Chosen of the Ashen Serpent since her union with that buried god multiplied her power past comfortable reckoning. She rules from the Serpent's Crown, the original primary ziggurat remade as her seat, around which the signs of her never rest: black smoke moving against the wind, ash rising in slow spirals, ember-light running the carved channels, and now and again a vast spectral coil sliding over the stone. She holds no priestly title, and it has never mattered — on parchment Kharbeta answers to Merynon, and in practice the rites of the whole Creed answer to her. Her Legion of Ash garrisons the city, an army of zealots pledged to her personally through Umbrasia — an irreversible gift of their own thymara, formally sworn and meticulously recorded, in a city that records everything.

The Furnace of Souls

Kharbeta is the pilgrimage heart of the Infernal Creed, and the pilgrimage is a machine. The devout arrive with money and ambition, seeking power and proof of worth in the holy city's sanctioned pleasures — every one of them organized, and every one of them priced. The Debt Halls make what follows procedural: registration, declaration, claim, arbitration, valuation, assignment. Most petitioners leave the free population entirely, their debts converted to labor with a clerk's efficiency; the capable few emerge marked for the legions, the temples and the sorcerous orders. The faithful call it the goddess's own sorting of the strong from the weak. Others notice that the sorting also happens to staff an empire. Kharbeta's credo, carved where every new arrival reads it, is honest about the terms: do what thou wilt — and pay for it.

The city drinks from the mountains: restored giant cisterns and aqueduct tunnels, cave pools and mineral springs, water that leaves pale and rust-red stains on everything it touches. The caverns honeycombing the Greathammers nearby yield fungi and lichens — bland, nourishing stores against siege or storm, and certain rarer species the rites reserve for themselves. Beyond the ramparts, within sight of the walls, a separate fortress-gate guards the road to the Blackspire Abyss — the wound the Deity's Sacrifice tore into the world — and past it the mountain corridor south to Rupater, which Kharbeta commands in every way that matters without owning in any way that is written. A few Colossi serve still, soldiers and emergency builders on the giant scale; the city that broke their people keeps a use for their hands, which is the most Kharbetan mercy there is.
