Daskilon

The City That Teaches War

Where the savanna gives out against volcanic sand and the foothills of the Greathammers begin, the Suvanar of the Fivefold Fleets set down the city that would arm a quadrant of the world. Daskilon is basalt and drill-yard and forge-smoke: a fortress-nation of stone, steel, fire and rhinoceros cavalry, and the one place on the continent where the making of true steel is still understood.

It is not the largest city of its bloc, nor the richest. It is the one the others cannot do without.

Didasco — To Teach, To Master

Daskilon's ruling line takes its name from an old Suvanar verb meaning to teach, to master, to instruct, and the name was earned rather than assumed. When the fleets fled the collapse of Vadesh, only a handful of survivors carried the knowledge of forging true steel — a metallurgy that ordinary ironcraft cannot approach. The founder of Daskilon was the man who kept it, and who rebuilt the tradition once the Suvanar found iron in the north.

His heirs are therefore not merely kings. They are keepers of knowledge, master smiths and instructors of war, and their dynasty holds that the three are one office.

The Throne Is Not Inherited

Alone among the great houses of Kworgalya, Daskilon does not pass its rule by birth order. The seat goes by merit to whichever claimant best embodies the teacher, the warrior and the leader at once, and the ruler bears the title Strategos rather than any word for king.

The practical effect is that Daskilon has produced very few incompetent rulers and a great many bitter cousins.

Iron From the North, Steel From the Forge

The city sits inside one of the oldest deadlocks on the continent. The iron veins belong to Soryntha. The knowledge to refine that iron into Suvanar true steel belongs to Daskilon and to nobody else.

Neither city can move against the other without disarming itself. So the two have circled each other for centuries in a relationship that is mutually dependent, outwardly respectful, and taut as a drawn wire — and every Strategos since the founding has understood that the day one of them solves its half of the problem is the day the wire snaps.

The Four Crafts

War, arms and armour, stonecutting, and the rhinoceros.

Daskilon's engineers are the most valued fortress-builders in the south — they raised the walls of Skaitos, strengthened Ignis Sanctum, and worked out how to move soldiers through lava tubes as though they were roads. Its herds supply heavy cavalry to half the bloc. And in the volcanic country toward the Cinder Peaks it breeds the magma rhinos: beasts untroubled by heat that can be driven into a charge like a moving furnace, and whose corps is reckoned the equal of anything short of a dragon on open ground.

The priestesses of Velastra ride with the army as a matter of ancient treaty, and their battle-blessings, fire-wards and cooling chants are counted a division of it rather than a courtesy.

The Forge Beneath

True steel needs a heat no ordinary flame will hold, and Daskilon has never made a secret of the fact that its forges do not run on charcoal alone.

When the Suvanar first scouted these foothills they found broken tunnels beneath them, rivers of fossilised lava, ruined workings older than their own people — and, half-buried in the rock and entirely awake, an ancient dragon whose breath alone could liquefy iron. What was agreed between the founder and the thing under the mountain is remembered as the Pact of Stone and Flame, and the city has kept its side of it ever since.

What the dragon takes in return is not gold.

The Red Eyes

Those who work longest closest to the dragon-fed forges begin to change. First the eyes take a faint ember cast in the dark, and reflexes sharpen, and sparks stop catching on the skin. Then the eyes burn outright, the veins carry a low light, and a smith or a soldier finds fire answering to them for a few seconds at a time — along with a temper that shortens year by year. Pushed far enough, a man in the third stage stops being anyone at all for as long as it lasts, fights like a lit building, and either collapses afterward or does not come back.

Daskilon calls this the Red Eyes, and it is feared and coveted in equal measure. Whole formations volunteer for postings near the forges to court it. The Emberguard, who understand better than most what is actually happening, have pressed for generations to have the practice restricted, and the army has explained every time that it cannot afford to.

The city's dwarven population is untouched by it. Nothing in a dwarf answers to that fire. This is why the Stone-Eyed Guild — dwarven gate-wardens, rune-smiths and deep surveyors in granite plate — holds the six pressure-locks of the undercity, maps the ruins nobody else can walk through, and is the only body in the world seriously researching a cure.

What comes up out of those tunnels to test the locks is another matter, and the Guild does not discuss it with foreigners.

The Bloc, and the Witch

Daskilon leads a bloc that is politically separate but economically inseparable: Hipalos for horses and trade, Erothys for grain and ceramics, Velastra for doctrine and the sea-gate. It works closely with the Emberguard at Ignis Sanctum on patrols, sanctuary-building, volcano-watching and the hunting of demons, and the two have edged toward something deeper than alliance for a century without either saying so aloud.

And to the south-west lies Skaitos, seat of the Cinder Witch. She does not rule here. Her dead cross the border anyway, her influence bends local politics, and the magma corps trains specifically to break fire-warped things. The Strategoi watch her the way one watches weather: constantly, and without any expectation of changing it.

Whoever holds Daskilon holds the pass between the Ashen Plains and the east, the supply of true steel, and the only cavalry on the continent that can meet a demon in the open field. The city knows it. It has built everything else on that fact.
