The Cursed Blue Rose
Taiga is thin country — black spruce, bog, snow that outstays every other season — and Kotori stands where it breaks against high stone. This is the home mountain, the peak the dwarves of the west name as theirs, with a river at its foot to give water, float timber and move anything too heavy for a road. The city's business is not ore. Barrack galleries, armouries, drill floors cut flat out of the rock, muster yards cleared of snow before first light: Kotori arms and feeds columns that the mining towns could never keep. Food and metal come in from those towns. What goes back out is protection.
Kotori was raised in the first wave of expansion after the original foundations, and the mining country of the west and north-west takes its orders here — the gem-cutting towns, the landlocked ore towns, the late shafts driven out under the sea. Its dwarves are sons like every dwarf, crafted by the hands that came before them, and in Kotori a son is measured for a place in a column before he is measured for a bench.
