The dwarves are usually counted among the peoples with no religion. They keep one. It is not built the way the southern faiths are built: nobody in a hold is invited to believe in a maker he has never met. Every dwarf alive is carrying a piece of him.
The Elder the holds name the Greatfather — the Hammer, the blue of the five — forged the first five hundred dwarves at the Great Renewal, and not out of nothing. He divided his own crystalline substance to do it, and when the work was finished he was visibly older than when he began. Those five hundred are the Greatsons, and every dwarf since has come down from one of them by the same method and at the same price.
"By the Greatfather's anvil."
A dwarf swears it over a dropped tool. That is the character of the religion: few formal occasions, because it is performed continuously.
A dwarf does not father a son. He crafts one, and the crafting is a permanent transfer — memory, skill, cognitive architecture, and the unbroken continuity running back to the Greatfather's hands, cut out of the maker and set into the made. What wakes is a new person already carrying centuries of another man's competence. The maker is smaller for the rest of his life.
Age is read among the Himanar accordingly. A weathered dwarf is not one who has merely lasted but one who has given a great deal away, and the reading is exact. Most stop at seven or eight centuries, when there is not enough of them left to divide safely.
Every dwarf can name his makers backward, hand to hand, until the chain reaches a Greatson and the Greatson reaches the Hammer. Reciting that line is the closest thing the faith has to prayer, and it is not prayer. It is a claim of provenance, and it can be checked.
The Greatfather's teaching is given in the holds as unity and shared burden, and understood there as a refusal of two errors at once. A continuity that swallows the person is not continuity but erasure. A liberty that owes nothing to anyone is not liberty but a line that ends. Dwarven fatherhood sits between them: enough of the maker must survive for a civilisation to persist, and not so much that the son is only his father continued.
From that follows the thing outsiders notice first and understand last. No labour in a hold belongs to one dwarf. Weight is distributed until none is crushed and none stands idle; to shirk is the only sin the holds prosecute with any heat, and to ask for help is not humility but arithmetic.
The creed is not recited because it does not need to be. It is enacted every time a burden is picked up.
The Hammer's own art is Numina, the storing of thymara and finished expertise inside crafted matter. A numinar — a tool carrying its maker's solved problem to a stranger who could never have solved it — is the doctrine performed in metal.
The holds keep no temples of the southern sort. They keep forges, and treat them accordingly.
The Frostforged Valkyries are woken by an art that reserves nothing to a priest. Any dwarf who knew the working could do it. Nothing in the craft prevents him, and nothing in it prevents cruelty either: the bond it makes is permanent and can be turned against the will of the one bound. What stands between the art and its abuse is not the art. It is dwarven custom, and the office that maintains dwarven custom.
The clergy exist to govern what may be known and what may be made. Their monopoly is informational: they control who is taught, in what order, and never all at once. Where a binding answers to dwarven authority in general rather than to one owner, that same office can overrule the dwarf who believes he commands it. And the definitions it all rests on — what is a maker, what is a tool, what is a servant, what is a person — are not quiet matters of doctrine. They are the instruments of dwarven politics, and the priesthood holds them.
The rule they enforce most plainly is the oldest: the only cold a made thing may lawfully take is lent by the frozen world through communion with the Great Spirit of Ice, and never taken for gain.
A religion organised around the control of knowledge has an orthodoxy, and an orthodoxy has heretics. The holds have both. The strictest reading is kept out past the treeline at Frostdeep Eternum, on the open ice, where the business of the place is its own and the priesthood prefers it so.
A few human generations ago a company of makers left — or was put out — for the foundry-city of Keberun on the western shore. Which authority condemned them the holds still dispute; some name the forges of Kotori, some the deep north, and neither will claim the honour in front of a stranger. What is agreed is that they were contemptuous of the law reserving sacred metal, and that what they carried away was knowledge — the one thing that could not be afforded. The charge against them has never been that their work failed.
What they were reaching for is the heresy the orthodoxy fears most: a way for a person to continue in a crafted body, owing nothing to a maker, answering no command, and requiring no father to be diminished to exist. If that can be done, then maker, tool, servant and person stop being separate categories — and the offices that sort them stop being necessary.
Every quarrel in the holds narrows to one question, and it is about fathers. How much of the maker must survive in the made for the line to hold, and how much must be surrendered before the son is genuinely his own?
The orthodoxy has an answer and enforces it. The heretics had an answer and were put out on the ice for it. The Greatfather answered it once, with his own substance, and his sons have been arguing about what the answer meant ever since.
