Portavena

The Fracture-Gate of the Southern Road

Where the long east–west arm of the Greathammers finally breaks, there is a gap — and in the gap stands Portavena, one of the oldest cities of the desert, raised in the first wave of expansion when the interior was still a rumor. The mountain here is shattered stone, and the fractures drink: rain and runoff from the surrounding heights gather in the broken rock, and the first Lohanar settlers found in that natural cistern the one thing the road south could not do without. Every empire since has agreed with them.

A City in the Rock and Before It

Portavena is carved as much as built. Terraces of black basalt step down the mountainside; galleries, cisterns and cool storage halls run back into the cut stone, where the archives and the water live safe from sun and siege. Below and beyond the rock spreads the outer city — caravan courts, warehouses, inns and markets under timber roofs and imported brick — and across the whole width of the natural gap runs the wall, closing the pass the way a hand closes on a coin.

Its people tend the water like a temple cult. Roof-catchments and mountain gutters feed settling basins; spent water is led back into the fractured stone to sink and be drunk again; inspection shafts and guarded draw-houses keep the potable stores apart from the troughs of ten thousand passing animals. Compact mountain goats pick through the ravines above the city, and the fermented milk they yield — the kefir of Portavena — is praised, with varying sincerity, along the whole length of the southern road.

The Gate the South Passes Through

Everything the wet south sends the desert comes through Portavena: timber, fired brick, ceramics, grain, and the goods of the Mirendite Lohanar and the eastern Ashanar cities. Everything the desert answers with passes back the same way. The city grew great for the simplest of reasons — for centuries no other power had the interest or the reach to govern the long, lethal stretch between Merynon and the southern coasts, and so the fracture-gate governed itself into indispensability. It answers now to Merynon within the Infernate, which values it precisely as it appears: a wall, a well, and a customs house set in the one place the mountains permit a road.
