The Cursed Blue Rose
The south-west is open country broken by water. Grassland covers six of its sixteen charted settlements, temperate rainforest four, and seasonal forest and hard-leaved chaparral the rest. Seven of the towns stand on lakes and four on the ocean, a wetter reckoning than the dry centre; five live inland with no water at all. Mining leads in five towns, farming in three, with naval trade, production and overland trade behind.
All sixteen settlements of the south-west are Ashanar. No other region of the Atlas is undivided in its people, and the effect is a country whose quarrels are between seats rather than between kinds.
Those quarrels are real enough. Mazarka and Tamazor hold four settlements each and both are great cities in their own right; Tiramun and Nurazar hold three apiece, Bareshum two. Above them the bloc of Kerevoz gathers seven towns and that of Saradir five, so that much of what the south-west decides is decided under a name that is not its own.
