Grass runs unbroken in every direction from Talagan, and the wealth is underneath it. The town takes ore from the ground at the centre of the continent, and where the sod has not been stripped for digging it is ploughed or grazed, so that one family will often hold a share in a working and a field besides. It is a modest place with a hard-handed look to it: spoil heaps at the edge of the grass, cart-ruts cut deep by loaded wagons, and a horizon with nothing on it to break the wind.
Talagan was raised in the fifth and most recent wave of expansion. Defence sits third in its living, after the mines and the fields, and the town keeps more arms than a place this size ordinarily needs. The Talganers are Suvanar. They answer to Eisvelde and, beyond it, to the Risbern bloc, and they hold a standing rivalry with Flammund that colours a good deal of Talganer talk in the market and the drink-house. Their faith is the Radiant Light.
