The Cursed Blue Rose
The country around Ausavat is spruce, bog and stone, and it gives up little: small fields, grudging harvests, a short window in which anything can be moved by cart. The lake is the compensation. In summer it carries men and supplies; when it hardens, it becomes a better road than any the land offers. On its shore the city keeps what a garrison must keep — barracks, drill grounds, pens for remounts, salt fish and dried meat stacked against a winter that always outlasts the estimate. Soldiering is the trade here, and everything else in the place exists to keep soldiers standing.
Ausavat went up in the fourth wave of expansion, before the newest northern foundations, and it has the settled weight of a city that has held the same ground for a long time. Its people are elves, patient with a duty measured in centuries. The levies it raises and the routes it keeps open are held for Glac Dom.
