Duradun

The Forward Forge of the North

Duradun was mined for iron and settled for war, in that order. It rose in the third wave of expansion as Caminor's northern sister, and in the Second Crusade against the Beasts it served as the forward base of the whole northern effort — the last forge before the fighting. When the war ended, the state offered its veterans something better than farmland they did not want: homes, herds and a frontier to hold. The old Crusade camp never left the city's plan. The veteran wards still run in straight streets and repeated rectangular plots, built for men who liked their lanes wide enough to move livestock or a column through, and Dunnic civic life still keeps a soldier's habits — readiness, tallying, and a plain distrust of anything ornamental.

Iron in the Open

Where Caminor sinks shafts, Duradun strips the ground: broad open iron cuts lie directly against the walls, staining the approaches rust-red. The volume is respectable and the city knows exactly what that word means — the serious smelting and forging were concentrated at Caminor long ago, and Duradun's forge quarter does honest rearmament work while nursing a rivalry that the southern sister, maddeningly, treats as endearing. What the city lacks in furnaces it recovers in discipline: its exhausted cuts are sealed, roofed and kept as covered reservoirs — sound human engineering, if not dwarven — and its nomads' longer-haired goats yield the fine woven blankets and garments that are the one luxury Dunnic pride permits itself.

The Red Hooves

Duradun's most famous residents come down from the Western Frostpeaks on two legs, each carrying an armory's weight of muscle. Minotaurs who wander south from the mountain holds are hired here by the Infernate as shock troops and linebreakers — the Red Hooves, named for what their victory-dances do to a battlefield's fallen, a berserker's grounding rite that no one who has seen it asks to see twice. The city keeps a permanent Red Hoof mustering hall, a tavern built to their scale, and a shrine of the Creed where horned heads bow beside human ones; the Creed, which measures every soul by its strength, has never found anything in a minotaur to object to. Those too old for the line often stay: a retired Red Hoof at a heavy forge, hammer in hand, is worth three human strikers, and the best of them are eventually poached — like so much else — by Caminor.
