The Cursed Blue Rose
Scrub, stone and low thorn. The chaparral around Ernmark yields nothing quickly, and the town carries a crop only where the ground has been worked hard: grain where the land lies flat, vine and orchard where it tilts, goat-herds turned out across the rest. Herding counts for as much as the plough here, because the flocks eat what no field will grow and a dry season is survived on animals. It is a modest town, and the measure of its wealth is how much scrub has been argued into pasture.
Ernmark belongs to the fifth and most recent wave of expansion, and it still has the shape of a new foundation: streets laid straight, walls newer than the orchards outside them, a watch kept in earnest. Defence is the third trade after crop and flock, and Ernmarkers treat a turn on the wall as ordinary labour rather than as honour. The people are Suvanar. They answer to Risbern with nothing in between, and they hold to the Radiant Light.
