The Cursed Blue Rose
The ground Kimmend holds is thin: a strip in the west where the boreal forest gives out and the ocean takes over, conifers standing almost to the waterline. Cold governs most of the year, and the open season is short enough that nothing in it is wasted. What the forest yields and what the boats bring in does not leave in the state it arrived. The work here is production, raw material taken in at one end and finished goods sent out at the other, and the living comes from the difference between the two.
Kimmend belongs to the fifth and most recent wave of expansion, one of the newer holdings on this stretch of coast. The folk here are Ashanar, covenant-keepers of the far horizons who reckon distance in sailing weeks and hold a spoken bond as tightly as a written one. The city does not stand alone. Its allegiance runs to Saradir, and it keeps that arrangement the way this people keep every arrangement they make.
