Brunthar

The Northern Shepherds' Exchange

Brunthar wears the same color as its living: a city of buff granite and brown gneiss burnished golden by the dust of a hundred thousand sheep. It stands at the Infernate's northern border on rough, rocky ground over enormous deposits of gold and tin, and its history runs in three ages — first a mining camp, then a merchant town, and now the linchpin of the fat-tailed sheep transhumance that feeds the whole northern Infernate, its salted mutton marching with Flammunder hardtack in every soldier's pack. The great flocks never enter the city; the Shepherds' Exchange sprawls outside the walls, vast and seasonal, and the wool-dust drifts in over everything like weather.

The Polite Fiction

Brunthar's second fortune is geography of a subtler kind. A short road north lies Taluwyn, a crossroads city that belongs to no bloc and profits from all of them — and through Taluwyn, the merchants of four foreign blocs whose governments would never openly treat with a demon-worshipping slave power buy Infernate metal and sell it grain, timber and fine goods by proxy. Everyone involved knows precisely what is happening; the arrangement survives because no signature ever crosses the wrong table. The Hall of Four Roads exists to keep that fiction load-bearing — bonded warehouses, private cistern allotments, currency exchange and quiet arbitration for parties who officially are not present — and the Taluwyn Gate, faced in blue-glazed northern ceramic against the brown city, is Brunthar's one architectural boast: the door through which the world pretends not to arrive.

Gold Below, Water in the Cuts

The mining never stopped; it merely learned its place. Deep shafts still bring up gold, worked — as everywhere the Infernate concentrates such labor — by the unfree, while the old open tin cuts are stabilized, sealed and roofed one by one into a belt of covered cisterns fed by snowmelt, runoff, mine seepage and the ugly northern winters. It is a miner's trick turned to a merchant's purpose: the water in the converted cuts serves caravans, flocks and foreign courts alike, and makes a border town on rocky ground one of the most reliable waterings on the whole cross-continental road. Brunthar answers to Flammund's sphere rather than Merynon's — a northern arrangement old enough that no one presses the question of what, precisely, it is.
